Long time, no see! An update on my life and what to expect from this blog in the future.

Hello faithful readers!

Perhaps it is unsurprising that my output has not been substantial as of late; partly because I am a perfectionist when it comes to my work and more significantly, I am currently studying for a Masters degree in Critical and Creative Writing.

Don’t worry! I’ll spare you the ‘I’m embarking on a new chapter in my life’ and all the rest of that shtick we’ve heard rehashed a hundreds time over. Instead, lets focus on what actually matters; firstly, this blog and my plans for it and secondly, and arguably more importantly, you. Yes, you readers are the primary reason why I have dragged myself about bed each morning, with a cup of coffee in hand, and started typing away about some topic or another.

For the past three years I’ve been writing on WordPress, it’s become something of a second home to me; somewhere I could turn to when I needed a sense of peace in my life. Yet, paradoxically it’s also been my greatest failure – at least in the sense of how I originally envisioned it to be. Let’s face it; given how criminally low my turn out is for producing posts on here, it’s nothing short of a miracle that people are still interested in what I have to say!

On one hand, the long stretch between my posts is understandable and I try to be forgiving towards myself when I do get innately pissed off with how little I seem to get done. Firstly the content I produce takes time and a meticulous amount of research. Then there’s this inner perfectionist streak that’s plagued me since for as long as I can remember. Most importantly however, I am very aware of how I need to be careful with the words I use, given the delicate nature of some of the ideas I discuss and analyse from a multivariate standpoint.

Any good writer who publishes work on their blog, submits a piece for an online publication or works on a novel will tell you the same thing; it’s all about the rewrite; you will have shitty redraft after shitty redraft, and you undergo this torment precisely because you want your final product to be polished and to be able to engage as many readers as possible.

So why do I keep writing? Well, it’s hardly because it works out the way I want it to because it barely ever does. I write about mental health because I believe it is the right thing to do and the importance of maintaining a civil discourse about it in society cannot be underestimated! Of course, I also benefit by writing about these issues; in many ways, this blog acts as a form of self-reflective therapy. And as someone who strives to be the best version of themselves, in each and every way possible, WordPress is a great platform for discovering and rediscovering ways to achieve this hard-to-reach goal!

So finally, lets get to the main point of this blog entry. I want to know about your thoughts on the kind of work I’ve been posting. Has it been to your taste? Are there articles which are bit long-winded or too analytical for the content you typically look for online? In short, I want YOU to tell ME what sort of content you would you like to see in the future.

Here is a list of ideas, though of course they are not exhaustive, and I am more than open to alternative suggestions:

  • Would you like me to disclose more about my own personal circumstances in regards to my mental health etc?
  • Would you like to know more of my experience of working on a Masters degree? I know many of you are aspiring writers and perhaps this knowledge could be useful?
  • Would you like me to continue what I’ve been doing? Albeit on a far slower output than before for obvious reasons!
  • Perhaps you’d like to see excerpts of some of the creative writing I’ve been working on? Not just for self-validation on my part! I would be very interested in hearing your thoughts on the kind of fiction I write and ways in which I can improve my writing.

All in all, I’ll round off this post by thanking you for sticking with me and for even bothering to give the time of the day to read some of the issues I write about. More significantly however, if you have any comments or suggestions as to what you would like to see on this blog in the future I am very much open to suggestions!

Feel free to comment about your ideas below. Alternatively, you can send me a private message if it would be easier. I am very open and willing to discuss potential ideas etc 🙂

As always, stay safe, look after one another and be kind!

Jacob

  1. First, share as much as you want to share and as you feel comfortable sharing. Don’t worry about whether or not we care. (We do.) Next, yes’ I’d like to hear about your school experience. It’s a big part of your life right now, so go ahead and write about it. Please continue what you have been doing, but of course pace yourself; it’s not as if your WordPress posts are going to pay for any groceries or rent. Finally, I’d love to see some of your creative writing. J.

    1. Hi J. Thanks for your response! It’s nice to get an insight etc. Yeah I think writing content just for this blog has to take a backseat for now – but I’m not adverse to sharing some of my creative stuff. Thanks a lot for the support – it is appreciated!
